My best friend Emily came to Calvin on Thursday for the Faith and International Development Conference! It was so great to spend time with her, and the conference was really great as well!
Many speakers shared their experiences and lessons learned in development work, and breakout sessions took us deeper into issues and ideas like sex trafficking, sustainable farming, the role of business in missions, conflict resolution, and advocacy. I learned so much and met so many people who are dedicating their lives to the service of others in third world countries.
Something I learned that was very interesting to me is the tension that exists between individual and community realms. Things that affect the individual also affect the community, and the community is compromised of individuals. Everyone is in development together. Everyone is in life together, for that matter. Let's seek shalom for all, and not just our own personal dreams.
